Preparation
Good preparation is the single most important factor when it comes to achieving first class paintwork results. Poor finishes are almost always caused by poor preparation.
Customer preparation
Here’s what you can do to help us: –
- Strip your motorcycle down completely. Don’t leave items such as swinging arms and stands attached as we have no workshop equipment to remove them.
- Remove all roller or needle bearings.
There are two reasons for this
1. Roller or needle bearings that are left in can be ruined by the steel grit which we use during the shot blasting process.2. The oil and grease in these types of bearings will run out over your new paintwork when it is heated in the oven stoving process.
All other non-lubricated bearings can be left in.
- Thoroughly flush out tanks and oil in frame type frames with petrol or white spirit until the fluid is clean. Allow to drain until dry. Leave all filler caps and plugs in place to prevent grit from entering during the shot blasting process.
- Remove all small parts such as rubber grommets, plastic and nylon bushes. Most plastics will melt in the oven. Rubber is usually OK.
Most important is to degrease your frame and parts thoroughly. The presence of oil and grease can ruin the final paint finish during the high temperature stoving stage. You can leave degreasing to us – but we charge!!
Blast Cleaning
Our first step is to blast clean everything back to bare material. Blast cleaning not only removes rust and old paint, but it also removes surface contamination and keys the surface for the paint to hold. We use extremely fine grit for this process so that bearing surfaces and threads are not damaged. The grit we use is sharp enough to remove paint but not sharp enough to pit or remove underlying metal surfaces.
Masking
Once the blasting process has been completed, we then carry out the masking work. This consists of fitting tapered rubber bungs into female threads and high temperature stoving tape to machined surfaces and male threads. We prefer customers to leave all masking work to us. There is no need to fit bolts to threads or blank frame head stocks.
After masking comes the powder coating process.
